What is Scent Detection Training?

A great training activity for dogs giving them an opportunity to use their amazing natural ability to smell. It is fun for both human and dog and gives a wonderful ‘feel good factor’.

But how will it help me and my dog?

The benefits of scent work are huge. I have resolved many issues with reactive, nervous, over excitable dogs. I also recommend scent work activities for puppies, elderly dogs or dogs recovering from injury as it is a low impact activity. Best of all… it is a FUN way to spend time with your pet!

CAN ANY DOG TAKE PART?

Every single dog, no matter what age, breed or shape, as long as they have a nose!

Dogs use their sense of smell to tell them about the world. It is a natural behaviour and so using their nose has very quick results and rewards for both dog and handler.

WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

Exercises in the course include building freeze indication on target scent (KONG), completing searches on pots, pipes, and boxes, chairs, bags, vehicles and novel search environments such as exterior walls, fences and random new areas.

WHY DO SCENT TRAINING?

Scent detection can also be particularly beneficial for:

  • Expending excess energy
  • Keeping dogs stimulated
  • Dogs that can’t take part in higher impact activities
  • Boosting confidence
  • Re-directing a reactive dog’s focus

MY DOG IS REACTIVE, CAN I STILL COME?

That’s a massive YES. This is the ideal place to bring a reactive dog.

I normally have several reactive dogs in classes and most people would never notice. Using their noses is a great distraction.

Please give me a call before you bring a reactive or nervous dog along so that we can ensure that your dog is calm and settled (all dogs are required to be kept on leads).

If you have any questions please give me a call. I very much look forward to seeing you at a class or workshop soon.
